I agree with you about Nial buying the iPhone and just using the ‘i’ and not the ‘Phone’. I suppose it depends on long you are in the States but I’m not going to rush in for the iPhone. I’m going to wait to see what Google brings out…if they ever bring out a phone.

I jumped in with the release of the HP iPAQ 6515 messenger phone when it was released and I now curse the day I did it. Within a few very short months it took a slight spill, had to get the main board replaced but the phone was wrecked after that. Cost me 600 bucks at the time as well.

I’d be worried in that regard about the iPhone – once bitten twice shy guiding my purchasing intentions on this one. I don’t doubt the iPhone will pack a massive punch and the iPAQ was the only incident I’ve ever had with a mobile phone but I’d still be weary of laying down so much cash for the phone.

Hard to imagine though that if you buy the phone you wouldn’t be able to make calls on it, surely the likes of the 3G services or other ones would be limited?

On a lighter note, fair play on the new blog, really like it! (as a fairly new mac user as well)

I’m sure you’re right, Cormac. Hopefully I’ll be in the States for a while so I could justify buying one (if I do actually buy one). I could use it as an ipod in Ireland though, and I’m guessing you can use it on the web so long as there’s a wifi connection (maybe I’m wrong?). The actual phone part might be the only functionality I’d lose here.

If you buy the phone in the States can you put a Irish SIM card into it?
None of the Irish networks are supporting iPhone yet as far as I can tell.

I’m heading to the States soon and I was thinking of getting one. I’m still undecided. My biggest concern is carrying around something that expensive all the time. I’ve never lost a phone myself, but people lose such things all the time. I think I might wait to hear how durable they are to drunken shenanigans also.
